Kerry Washington was making waves on the red carpet long before skyrocketing to TV glory on "Scandal."

The gorgeous star's fashion - which earned her a stint as a guest judge on "Project Runway's" season finale - is usually breathtakingly bold at events, but Kerry prefers to keep it casual at home.

"My own personal style in life is really based on comfort," Kerry told Access Hollywood , at the "Project Runway" finale show during New York Fashion Week on Friday. "I'm a jeans and like, James Perse T-shirt kind of girl. But on the carpet, I like to have a lot of fun.

"I think of red carpet moments as creative endeavors - a moment to have an artful endeavor," she added.
The 36-year-old beauty said her love of fashion has been useful when developing her "Scandal" character, crisis manager Olivia Pope.

"One of the things I really love about Olivia Pope is I really got to bring a lot of my fashion wisdom to the character in working with the costume designer... I love her fashion," she said. "When people come up to me in the street and say, 'I want Olivia's closet,' I say, 'Me too!'
"One of the things I like about it is that it's not how I dress. Olivia really has her own way of dressing that's really clear in my mind," she continued. "I know when I put something on whether it's Olivia or not. And it helps me to get in character."
"Scandal" has earned a loyal audience (shout out to the Gladiators!) - many of whom binge-watched the first and second seasons.

Kerry said she can relate, as she's been binge-watching a few shows herself.

"I've been binge-watching 'The Newsroom' a little bit, and I love to binge-watch 'The Amazing Race' from my DVR," she told Access.
There is one show, however, that the Emmy-nominated star said she must watch in real time.
"I love 'Game of Thrones' and I can never binge-watch it because I have to watch it Sunday nights when it airs," she said. "That's a show I have to watch!"

"Scandal" Season 3 premieres on October 3 at 10/9c on ABC.
