Uh-oh. Them is fightin' words. On "Kris" on Friday, August 9, Kris Jenner called out none other than President Barack Obama for comments he made during his interview with David Blum for Kindle Singles about Kim Kardashian and her baby daddy, Kanye West.
So just what did the leader of the free world say to get on Mama Jenner's bad side? He basically indicated that celebrities like Kim and Kanye are to blame for bastardizing the American Dream to be too focused on material things.
"I do think what's shifted is a notion that the wealthier you are, the more conspicuous consumption you engage in. The more successful you are, the more society should stay out of your way as you pursue the bigger house or the fancier jet or the bigger yacht," the president explained.
"Were there things that all of us might have liked to have? Sure," he admitted before adding, "But partly, I think, there also has been a shift in culture. We weren't exposed to things we didn't have in the same way kids these days are. There was not that window into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Kids weren't monitoring every day what Kim Kardashian was wearing, or where Kanye West was going on vacation, and thinking that somehow that was the mark of success."
Not surprisingly, Jenner sees it differently.
"I bet the president has some friends with 10,000-square-foot houses and you probably wouldn't mind going over there, Mr. President, while you were asking them to have a party for you when you were campaigning for dollars to run for president," she asserted. (It's true that Obama did party it up at glitzy fundraising soirees hosted by the likes of George Clooney and Sarah Jessica Parker.)
That was a solid start, but Kris had more to say. A lot more. "Kanye West, first of all, doesn't go on vacation. Ever," she quipped. "And Kim Kardashian is the hardest-working young lady in the world. She never sleeps, she never stops, she never slows down and works so hard for what she's got."
And while Jenner admitted that Kim has acquired a bevy of luxurious, big-ticket items, she points out that the president still has more. "I started thinking about [Kim's] 10,000-square-foot house," Jenner explained. "I thought, wow, her job affords her to live in a 10,000-square-foot house. And I think, if I'm not mistaken, that Mr. President's job affords him to live in a 55,000-square-foot house. So basically my house would fit in his entry." While both houses sound pretty enormous to us, we have to admit, she has a point.
But it might have been one of her less accusatory remarks that resonated best. "I wasn't aware that you could only set the bar so high and that we could only dream so big," she mused. "I was taught: Dream big, work hard and you could have whatever you wanted." Even if "whatever you wanted" included five-star vacations, custom-built Italian villas, a successful QVC clothing line, a bevy of best-selling fragrances … oh, and several hit TV shows to document each and every moneymaking venture.
