Alicia Keys brought out all the glitz and glam in her latest Las Vegas showgirl inspired music video for the somber song “Tears Always Win,” but the flashy wardrobe and emotional story line wasn’t enough to distract protestors from signing a petition urging her not to perform in Israel next month.
Alicia’s wardrobe budget for the “Tears Always Win” vide must have been humungous because the Vegas styled costumes were simply breath-taking down to the very last detail.
The actual song itself is a rather somber tune about a woman missing her far away lover.
“These lips are missing you/ Cause these lips aren’t kissing you/ These eyes put up a fight/ but once again these tears always win,” she sings.
Well in order to match the emotional lyrics, Keys decided to introduce a storyline that was a little more than what you would expect from the song itself.
The 32-year-old soulful songstress definitely showed off a new side of her music as far as visuals go and even her stylist thinks so.
“It’s more fashiony and playful, clothing wise than many of her previous music videos,” Alicia’s stylist, Laura Jones, said.
She also used the sexy wardrobe to show off her amazing body. The mother-of-one has always been known for her toned physique despite the fact that she usually doesn’t flaunt it any revealing clothing.
The Vegas inspired look was a great way to add some sex appeal to the music video relying on being half-naked to sell her music – a great balance.
While fans have expressed their love for the song and their excitement over the music video they are still upset with the “Girl On Fire” crooner who is still refusing to cancel her July 4th show in Israel amidst all the cultural controversy.
Legendary celebrities and inspirational voices including Alice Walker had begged for Keys to cancel the show, but the R&B star refused to mix music and politics.
Well now fans have moved on past letter and are going for a petition instead.
The petition to cancel Alicia’s show in Tel Aviv has earned a whopping 12,000 signatures by Palestine-American groups.
The petition has since been delivered to the New York office of Keep a Child Alive, Alicia’s non-profit organization that seeks to help find a cure for HIV/AIDS.
Andrew Kadi, a member of U.S Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, delivered the papers and is chalking Alicia’s decision up to ignorance.
“We assume Alicia Keys wasn’t familiar with Israel’s abuses of Palestinian human rights, when scheduling, because her performance is legitimizing a country that systematically undermines non-profit’s mission, that ‘every person has the right to health care and that all children deserve a future.’”
It is true that many celebrities have canceled concert dates due to the controversy in Israel but we can’t help but also point out that many stars have continued on with their shows without nearly as much hoopla about it.
Of course, the big question here isn’t whether or not Alicia condones Israel’s actions but instead if she believes boycotting the country is the right way to address things.
